What is aromatherapy again???
Sharing this again to help people understand what aromatherapy Is.
So, what is it?
Aromatherapy is more than just the name suggests, - a therapy using aromas. It is healing the body, mind and spirit using healing oils.
It is a healing modality that has been around for centuries; however it is only in more recent times that it has become more widely known.
The oils used in aromatherapy are called essential oils. They are extracted from herbs, bark, flowers, resin, peel and roots of various plant sources. The most common method for extracting these oils is via steam distillation. During the distillation process two liquids are obtained – the essential oil and the waters of distillation (also known as hydrosols).
Essential oils are highly concentrated materials therefore only a few drops are needed to make a difference in most cases. They can be used in a variety of ways including massage, inhalation, vapourising, hot or cold compressions and spritzers to name a few.
It is important to understand that whilst aromatherapy uses natural products it does not always mean it is safe to use all oils. A qualified aromatherapist, like myself, is well versed in the contraindications of the oils. As each person is different, a full consultation is required to determine what oils to use, in what dilution and the best application method.
